The area is bordered (from north, clockwise) by the remain part of Bispevbjerg, the districts Østerbro og Nørrebro, the municipality of Frederiksberg and the districts Vanløse og Brønshøj-Husum. The major roads Tagensvej, Frederiksborgvej, Tuborgvej/Tomsgårdsvej/Hjulgårdsvej, Borups Allé and Hillerødgade all cuts through Nordvest.

Two larger green areas can be found in the area, Utterslev Mose is the north west border of the area, while the cemetery Bispebjerg Kirkegård is situated somewhat centrally in the area. Further a number of smaller green areas can be found, notably the Emaljehaven (lit.: the Enamel Garden), which is a renovated green area, that previously housed a large metal workshop, Rødkilde park (lit.: The Red Source park), which hosts the Rødkilde Nature Playground and the Nordvestparken (lit.: the North West park) from 2009 which won the Danish Light Award in 2010.

The previous social housing and industrial buildings has undergone a transformation, and while the old buildings as of 2013 very much stands, they somewhat serve different purposes. A lot of the old buildings have not or only to a partial extend been modernized With the relocation of much of the industry to less populated areas, the old industrial complexes, provides an used opportunity for modern housing and activities. As such the successor to the old Ungdomshuset can be seen in the area, as can a large cultural creativity space Boljefabrikken (lit. the Candy factory), which is in fact housed in an old smithy and plumming factory. The areas "rugged" image still sticks and because of this it has attracted the nicknames Nordværst (North Worst) and Nordlædervest (North Leather West). As a result of this housing costs are comparatively low to other areas of Copenhagen, and in the neighbor district Østerbro and the neighboring municipality of Frederiksberg, housing prices are on average 50% higher than in Nordvest. Crime rates however are in fact the same as in most of urban Copenhagen.

Even though the area is formally a part of the district Bispebjerg, the Nordvest is often approached in connection with the district Nørrebro, and Copenhagen municipality is in fact, doing an active effort of creating a larger integration between Nordvest and Nørrebro.
