A redesigned Pathfinder will go on sale in late 2012 as a 2013 model. Following the footsteps of the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango, it will become a unibody car-based crossover. It will ride on the same platform as the Infiniti JX, Altima, Maxima, Murano and Quest.

The concept was first revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show and was speculated to be very close to the production model. Retail availability is scheduled for September 2012. The new Pathfinder dropped the 4.0-liter 24-valve V6 in favor of the VQ35DE 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 to improve fuel efficiency. Specifications for the V6 are 260 hp (194 kW) and 240 pound-feet (325 N·m). City, highway and combined average fuel economy numbers are 20 (City), 26 (Highway) and 22 (Combined) mpg for the FWD version and 19 (City), 25 (Highway) and 21 (Combined) mpg for the 4WD version. The Pathfinder is now one of the lightest vehicles in its segment, with the FWD model tipping the scales at a mere 4149 pounds. Even the 4WD Pathfinder weighs only 4290 pounds. All play a role in the significant improved fuel economy.

This generation also abandons the door handles that were placed on the C pillar that were present in the previous three generations.

Famous quotes containing the words fourth, generation and/or series:

... men and women are not yet free.... The slavery of greed endures. Little child workers, the hope of the future, are sacrificed to industry. Young men are sent out by the billion to die for profits.... We must destroy industrial slavery and build industrial democracy.... The people everywhere must come into possession of the earth [second, third, and fourth ellipses in source].
    Sara Bard Field (1882–1974)

There is hardly an American male of my generation who has not at one time or another tried to master the victory cry of the great ape as it issued from the androgynous chest of Johnny Weissmuller, to the accompaniment of thousands of arms and legs snapping during attempts to swing from tree to tree in the backyards of the Republic.
    Gore Vidal (b. 1925)

Depression moods lead, almost invariably, to accidents. But, when they occur, our mood changes again, since the accident shows we can draw the world in our wake, and that we still retain some degree of power even when our spirits are low. A series of accidents creates a positively light-hearted state, out of consideration for this strange power.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
