Professional Career
Schmidt was drafted by the San Diego Padres with the 23rd overall pick of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft and signed with the Padres as on June 28, 2007. In that year, he made his professional debut with the Class A Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League, appearing in three games. Schmidt missed the entire 2008 season after having reconstructive surgery on his elbow. He spent the 2009 season playing with both Fort Wayne and the Lake Elsinore Storm, compiling a combined 6-8 record with a 5.24 ERA and 1.72 WHIP. The 2010 season was spent with Class A+ Lake Elsinore, where he went 6-9 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. In 2011, Schmidt appeared again with Lake Elsinore as well as with the rookie-league Arizona League Padres. He had a combined 4-6 record a with 3.91 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.
On December 9, 2011, the Padres sent Schmidt to the Colorado Rockies as the player to be named later to complete a trade for Huston Street.
