Nicholas Carew (Lord Privy Seal)

Nicholas Carew (died 1390) was Keeper of the Privy Seal during the reign of Edward III of England.

Nicholas Carew was descended from the Carew family of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire. Sometime after 1352 he married Lucy, the daughter of Richard de Willoughby, and came into possession of the latter's manor at Beddington. Carew was a man of ability, holding the high office of Keeper of the Privy Seal from 1371 to 1377, and was one of the executors of King Edward's will. He died in 1390, and was buried in the church of St. Mary's at Beddington.

Famous quotes containing the words nicholas, carew and/or privy:

    Chanuka and St. Nicholas Day came almost together this year—just one day’s difference. We didn’t make much fuss about Chanuka: we just gave each other a few little presents and then we had the candles. Because of the shortage of candles we only had them alight for ten minutes, but it is all right as long as you have the song.
    Anne Frank (1929–1945)

    All things are lawful there that may delight
    Nature or unrestrained appetite.
    Like and enjoy, to will and act is one;
    We only sin when love’s rites are not done.
    —Thomas Carew (1589–1639)

    Before me you are a slug in the sun. You are privy to a great becoming and you recognize nothing. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is in your nature to do one thing correctly: tremble.
