Major Sponsorships
In 2003, Nextel and NASCAR announced a sponsorship agreement to rename NASCAR's top racing series the Nextel Cup beginning in 2004. In 2008, the series was renamed the NASCAR Sprint Cup due to Sprint Nextel's plan to phase out the Nextel brand name. Nextel was also a major sponsor of the now defunct ChampCar team PacWest Racing, which was owned by Craig McCaw's brother Bruce.
