Service
One of the more interesting aspects of this short branch line was the use of an interurban-style electric car #01 (nicknamed the "Ping Pong"), which would provide shuttle service between the Riverside Station on the Boston and Albany main line and a single station at Lower Falls. Early in the 20th century, to eliminate the cost and inconvience of running a steam-powered train, the Boston and Albany Railroad hung trolley wire over the track. For a brief period before passenger service ended, a single coach was pulled or pushed by an RS-1 locomotive.

Famous quotes containing the word service:
“The ruin of the human heart is self-interest, which the American merchant calls self-service. We have become a self- service populace, and all our specious comfortsthe automatic elevator, the escalator, the cafeteriaare depriving us of volition and moral and physical energy.”
—Edward Dahlberg (19001977)
“Barnards greatest war service ... was the continuance of full-scale instruction in the liberal arts ... It was Barnards responsibility to keep alive in the minds of young people the great liberal tradition of the past and the study of philosophy, of history, of Greek.”
—Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve (18771965)
“We could not help being struck by the seeming, though innocent, indifference of Nature to these mens necessities, while elsewhere she was equally serving others. Like a true benefactress, the secret of her service is unchangeableness. Thus is the busiest merchant, though within sight of his Lowell, put to pilgrims shifts, and soon comes to staff and scrip and scallop-shell.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
