Public Houses and Shops
Newton Hall has two shopping parades and a public library. There are two public houses, the Jovial Monk built in 1980 and the Newton Grange built in 2006. The estate's first pub, the Newton Hall, was built in 1968 but was demolished in August 2009. A private nursing home now stands on the site.
The nearby Arnison Centre, built on fields in the 1990s, covers an area of 208,000 square feet (19,300 m2) and serves much of Durham and beyond.

Famous quotes containing the words public, houses and/or shops:
“A public man must never forget that he loses his usefulness when he as an individual, rather than his policy, becomes the issue.”
—Richard M. Nixon (19131995)
“The light by which we see in this world comes out from the soul of the observer. Wherever any noble sentiment dwelt, it made the faces and houses around to shine. Nay, the powers of this busy brain are miraculous and illimitable.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“I, who cannot stay in my chamber for a single day without acquiring some rust,... confess that I am astonished at the power of endurance, to say nothing of the moral insensibility, of my neighbors who confine themselves to shops and offices the whole day for weeks and months, aye, and years almost together. I know not what manner of stuff they are of,sitting there now at three oclock in the afternoon, as if it were three oclock in the morning.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
