The Zoo Today
Newquay Zoo is Cornwall's only zoo and now covers over 13 acres (53,000 m2) of land, as well as housing 300 animals of over 130 species. An expansion of 3.5 acres (14,000 m2) opened as an African Savanna area from Easter 2009 followed by a new Philippines area housing endangered Fishing Cat, Visayan Warty Pig and Philippine spotted deer.

Famous quotes containing the words zoo and/or today:
“The zoo cannot but disappoint. The public purpose of zoos is to offer visitors the opportunity of looking at animals. Yet nowhere in a zoo can a stranger encounter the look of an animal. At the most, the animals gaze flickers and passes on. They look sideways. They look blindly beyond.”
—John Berger (b. 1926)
“Even today . . . experts, usually male, tell women how to be mothers and warn them that they should not have children if they have any intention of leaving their side in their early years. . . . Children dont need parents full-time attendance or attention at any stage of their development. Many people will help take care of their needs, depending on who their parents are and how they chose to fulfill their roles.”
—Stella Chess (20th century)
