Newcastle Grammar School - Suicide Incident and Alleged Culture of Bullying

Suicide Incident and Alleged Culture of Bullying

Newcastle Grammar School received newspaper coverage in October 2012 after a 15-year-old former student committed suicide. His family alleged that there was a culture of bullying at the school and a lack of pastoral support, and they said this had led to the boy's death. The school Headmaster Alan Green said that the school works extremely hard at resolving bullying and relationship issues, but may not always find out about such issues, especially when they involve incidents that happen outside of the school itself.

In February 2013, the bullying issue again became prominent following additional allegations of a culture of tolerating bullying that were raised by current and former teachers and students. The school headmaster acknowledged that there was bullying at the school and that concerns about bullying had been raised in a recent survey, but said there was bullying at every school and denied that the school had a culture of tolerating bullying.

They can rule the world while they can persuade us
our pain belongs in some order.
Is death by famine worse than death by suicide,

    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

I teazed him with fanciful apprehensions of unhappiness. A moth having fluttered round the candle, and burnt itself, he laid hold of this little incident to admonish me; saying, with a sly look, and in a solemn but quiet tone, “That creature was its own tormentor, and I believe its name was BOSWELL.”
    James Boswell (1740–1795)

The entire construct of the “medical model” of “mental illness”Mwhat is it but an analogy? Between physical medicine and psychiatry: the mind is said to be subject to disease in the same manner as the body. But whereas in physical medicine there are verifiable physiological proofs—in damaged or affected tissue, bacteria, inflammation, cellular irregularity—in mental illness alleged socially unacceptable behavior is taken as a symptom, even as proof, of pathology.
    Kate Millett (b. 1934)

Unthinking people will often try to teach you how to do the things which you can do better than you can be taught to do them. If you are sure of all this, you can start to add to your value as a mother by learning the things that can be taught, for the best of our civilization and culture offers much that is of value, if you can take it without loss of what comes to you naturally.
    D.W. Winnicott (20th century)

Most fatal, most hateful of all things is bullying.... Sensual bullying of course is fairly easily detected. What is more dangerous is ideal bullying. Bullying people into what is ideally good for them.
