This byelection was one of a series held to confirm appointments to the Executive Council, which was the old parliamentary convention. As this byelection writ was filled by acclamation, no polling day was required and the seat was filled within two weeks. In 1890 changes in population and boundaries led to the riding's renaming as Westminster, with the following year that riding being subdivided into Westminster-Chilliwhack, Westminster-Delta, Westminster-Dewdney and Westminster-Richmond, which were to become a few elections later the Chilliwhack (later Chilliwack) Delta, and Richmond ridings. The core of the New Westminster urban area (then still separate from Vancouver's) continued to be represented by New Westminster City until 1916, when that riding was redistributed as a one-member seat from its maximum of three, and in the process it was given the old rural riding's name, "New Westminster".

Famous quotes containing the words electoral and/or history:

Nothing is more unreliable than the populace, nothing more obscure than human intentions, nothing more deceptive than the whole electoral system.
    Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C.)

The history of progress is written in the blood of men and women who have dared to espouse an unpopular cause, as, for instance, the black man’s right to his body, or woman’s right to her soul.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)
