New Mexico Lobos Basketball

The University of New Mexico Lobos men's basketball team competes in the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I. UNM established basketball as a varsity sport in 1899, just eight years after the invention of the sport, but it wasn't until the school hired an athletic director in 1920 that the athletic department became competitive among regional colleges of the western United States.

Famous quotes containing the words mexico and/or basketball:

Is this what all these soldiers, all this training, have been for these seventy-nine years past? Have they been trained merely to rob Mexico and carry back fugitive slaves to their masters?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.
    Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
