New Braunfels High School - Academics

Academics

Several New Braunfels graduates have been named as Scholars, Finalists, Semi-finalists, and Commended by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Along with the 4 core areas, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and English, NBHS offers many career classes. These range from Business Management to Automotive Technician. New Braunfels High School also offers Advanced Placement classes. Among the former pupils of New Braunfels is the Finnish politician Marja Tiura, who graduated in 1986, and in 1999 became a Member of Parliament in the Parliament of Finland as well as deputy chairman of the Finnish National Coalition Party. She lost her seat in the 2011 general election.Tiura has made headlines in Finland in 2009 and 2010 for coming under parliamentary and police investigation for allegedly taking bribes from significant business enterprises led by Kyösti Kakkonen of the KMS Group and Arto Merisalo of the Nova Group. The accusation is that she received this money so that she would become an undeclared lobbyist for their own business concerns. In the end the accusations did not lead to charges.

Famous quotes containing the word academics:

Our first line of defense in raising children with values is modeling good behavior ourselves. This is critical. How will our kids learn tolerance for others if our hearts are filled with hate? Learn compassion if we are indifferent? Perceive academics as important if soccer practice is a higher priority than homework?
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

Almost all scholarly research carries practical and political implications. Better that we should spell these out ourselves than leave that task to people with a vested interest in stressing only some of the implications and falsifying others. The idea that academics should remain “above the fray” only gives ideologues license to misuse our work.
    Stephanie Coontz (b. 1944)
