Nest Box - Birds

Birds

Different sizes of nest-box suit different species of birds with very small boxes attracting wrens and treecreepers and very large ones attracting ducks and owls. Seasonally removing old nest material and parasites is important if they are to be successfully re-used.

Blue Tits, Great Tits and Tree Sparrows have been shown to prefer woodcrete boxes to wooden. Birds nesting in woodcrete sites had earlier clutches, a shorter incubation period, and more reproductive success, perhaps because the synthetic nests were warmer than their wooden counterparts.

Famous quotes containing the word birds:

    She does the work about the house
    As well as most, but like a mouse:
    Happy enough to chat and play
    With birds and rabbits and such as they,
    So long as men-folk keep away.
    Charlotte Mew (1870–1928)

    What a fog! Plane been buzzin’ around overhead for the last half hour. Must be like trying to find your way through the inside of a cow. I never did see such a country. Even the birds are walkin’.
    Dalton Trumbo (1905–1976)

    My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one,
    and come away.
    For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
    The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
    —Bible: Hebrew The Song of Solomon (l. II, 10–12)
