History, Formation and Campus Developments

NMMU was formed through the merger of the PE Technikon, which had its roots in the Port Elizabeth Art School founded in 1882 (the oldest art school in South Africa), the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) the country’s first dual-medium (English and Afrikaans) residential university and the Port Elizabeth Campus of Vista University.

Built on 830 ha of land donated by the then Port Elizabeth City Council, the campus was declared a nature reserve in 1983. It is the only university in South Africa to be situated on a nature reserve and the only university to offer game drives on its campus. The South, North and Second Avenue campuses are all situated close to the beach.

NMMU's campuses are:

  • South Campus, Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth
  • North Campus, Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth
  • 2nd Avenue Campus, Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth
  • Missionvale Campus, Uitenhage Road
  • Bird Street Campus, Central, Port Elizabeth
  • George Campus, George (Southern Cape)

Famous quotes containing the words formation and/or developments:

I want you to consider this distinction as you go forward in life. Being male is not enough; being a man is a right to be earned and an honor to be cherished. I cannot tell you how to earn that right or deserve that honor. . . but I can tell you that the formation of your manhood must be a conscious act governed by the highest vision of the man you want to be.
    Kent Nerburn (20th century)

I don’t wanna live in a city where the only cultural advantage is that you can make a right turn on a red light.
Freedom from labor itself is not new; it once belonged among the most firmly established privileges of the few. In this instance, it seems as though scientific progress and technical developments had been only taken advantage of to achieve something about which all former ages dreamed but which none had been able to realize.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)
