Nelson College - Houses

Houses

The College has a house system. In 2004, two new houses were formed, to add to the existing three boarding and three day houses. The current houses are:

Boarders

  • Barnicoat (White)
  • Fell (Maroon)
  • Rutherford (Black)

Day boys

  • Chaytor (Red)
  • Domett (Green)
  • Monro (Blue)
  • Robinson (Orange)
  • Kahurangi (Gold)

There is competition between the houses across a range of sporting codes and cultural activities.

Famous quotes containing the word houses:

    The houses are haunted
    By white night-gowns.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

Strange that so few ever come to the woods to see how the pine lives and grows and spires, lifting its evergreen arms to the light,—to see its perfect success; but most are content to behold it in the shape of many broad boards brought to market, and deem that its true success! But the pine is no more lumber than man is, and to be made into boards and houses is no more its true and highest use than the truest use of a man is to be cut down and made into manure.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Spooky things happen in houses densely occupied by adolescent boys. When I checked out a four-inch dent in the living room ceiling one afternoon, even the kid still holding the baseball bat looked genuinely baffled about how he possibly could have done it.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
