Nehru Zoological Park - Animals and Exhibits

Animals and Exhibits

The zoo occupies 380 acres (150 ha) and is adjacent to the 600-acre (240 ha) Mir Alam Tank. Nearly 100 species of birds, animals and reptiles are housed at the zoo, including indigenous animals like the Indian rhino, Asiatic lion, tiger, panther, gaur, orangutan, crocodile, python, as well as deer, kangaroos, antelopes, and birds.

The zoo's undulating landscape provides a natural setting to the animals and birds, which are displayed in large enclosures simulating natural habitats. The 200 year old 600-acre (240 ha) Mir Alam Tank, with its unique multiple arched bund (embankment), attracts hundreds of migratory birds, providing yet another attraction for the Zoo. The A.P. Tourism Development Corporation has introduced a ferry-boat and speed-boat, which also attracts a visitors for boat rides.

The nocturnal house at the zoo artificially reverses night and day for the animals so that nocturnal animals are active while visitors are at the zoo. This exhibit includes fruit bats, slender loris, slow loris, civets, leopard cats, hedgehogs, barn owls, mottled wood owls, fishing owls, and great horned owls.

Famous quotes containing the words animals and/or exhibits:

The saying, “The Magyar is much too lazy to be bored,” is worth thinking about. Only the most subtle and active animals are capable of boredom.—A theme for a great poet would be God’s boredom on the seventh day of creation.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

After all the field of battle possesses many advantages over the drawing-room. There at least is no room for pretension or excessive ceremony, no shaking of hands or rubbing of noses, which make one doubt your sincerity, but hearty as well as hard hand-play. It at least exhibits one of the faces of humanity, the former only a mask.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
