Naval Commandos (France) - History

History

The Naval Commandos were formed during World War II in Great Britain modeled alongside the British Commandos (who were founded in 1940). To remember this the beret of the French naval commandos and riflemen is worn pulled to the right with the badge worn over the left eye, the opposite of all other French units. Its manpower came from the Fusilier Marins.

It took part in the Normandy Landing on D-Day under command of Commandant Philippe Kieffer.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

There is no history of how bad became better.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
