Naval Academy Jewish Chapel - Architecture

Architecture

The 35,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) building was designed by Maryland architect Joseph Boggs. The entrance pavilion has elements related to the center bay of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Levy purchased it in 1834 and restored it because of his admiration for Jefferson, who died in 1826. The chapel includes a nearly 45-foot-high wall that is a replica of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The wall is made of Jerusalem stone. The roof of the building is constructed of copper. The architecture of the exterior is consistent with nearby Bancroft Hall.

The chapel was awarded the Maryland AIA Honor Awards 2006, Public Building of the Year; Institutional.

Famous quotes containing the word architecture:

For it is not metres, but a metre-making argument, that makes a poem,—a thought so passionate and alive, that, like the spirit of a plant or an animal, it has an architecture of its own, and adorns nature with a new thing.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.
    Audre Lorde (1934–1992)

The principle of the Gothic architecture is infinity made imaginable.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)
