National Symbols of Thailand

National symbols of Thailand include the official national emblem featuring the garuda and the national flag. There are also three other national symbols, which were proclaimed in a Declaration of the Office of the Prime Minister dated 26 October 2001. They are: the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) as the national animal, the flower of the Ratchaphruek or golden shower tree (Cassia fistula) as the national flower, and the Thai pavilion or Sala Thai as national architectural element.

Famous quotes containing the words national and/or symbols:

In the past, it seemed to make sense for a sportswriter on sabbatical from the playpen to attend the quadrennial hawgkilling when Presidential candidates are chosen, to observe and report upon politicians at play. After all, national conventions are games of a sort, and sports offers few spectacles richer in low comedy.

As usual I finish the day before the sea, sumptuous this evening beneath the moon, which writes Arab symbols with phosphorescent streaks on the slow swells. There is no end to the sky and the waters. How well they accompany sadness!
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)
