National Integrated Power Project

The National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) was planned as a "fast track" project with 7 power stations conceived in 2005 by the immediate past President Olusegun Obasanjo's Administration of the Federal Government of Nigeria to address the issues of low electric power generation and gas flaring from oil exploration in the Niger Delta region.

Planned power plants include:

  • Ihovbor Power Station Benin, Edo State with the capacity of 4 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Calabar Power Station, Cross River State with the capacity of 5 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Egbema Power Station, Imo State with the capacity of 3 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Gbarain Power Station, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State with the capacity of 2 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Sapele Power Station, Delta State with the capacity of 4 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Omoku Power Station, Rivers State with the capacity of 2 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW)
  • Ikot Abasi Power Station, Akwa Ibom with the capacity of 2 x 112,5MW (ISO 126MW) (replaced later by Ibom Power Station)

All these projects are based on $414,000,000 worth of contracts for the supply of turbines and electricity generation equipment to General Electric (GE). Africa Oil+Gas Report. The primary type of turbine used is GE 9E gas turbine with nominal ISO rating of 126MW. After adjusting for site conditions, the capacity was set to 112.5 MW. The plants are of low efficiency simple cycle but have the provision for future extension to combined cycle. Federal Ministry of Information.

Administration changes in 2007 resulted in an interruption in funding for more than two years. NDPHC.

The NIPP project includes 11 power plants and 4 FGN Power Stations:

  • Alaoji Power Station, Abia State, combined cycle plant with the capacity of 4 x 112,5MW (ISO 125MW) and 2x steam 255MW
  • Geregu II Power Station, Kogi State, with the capacity of 434MW
  • Omotosho II Power Station, Ondo State, with the capacity of 4 x 112,5 (ISO 125MW)
  • Olorunsogo II Power Station, Ogun State, combined cycle plant with the capacity of 4 x 125MW and 2 x steam 125MW

One original power plant has been removed. The Ikot Abasi NIPP power plant has been replaced by Ibom Power, which is a 190MW project of the Akwa Ibom State government. The revised NIPP project involves large scale transmission projects across all of Nigeria which is crucial to ensure power distribution from generation plants to final customers. NDPHC.

Famous quotes containing the words national, integrated, power and/or project:

I came here for one thing only, to try to help national Ireland—and if there is no such thing in existence then the sooner I pay for my illusions the better.
    Roger Casement (1864–1916)

Science is intimately integrated with the whole social structure and cultural tradition. They mutually support one other—only in certain types of society can science flourish, and conversely without a continuous and healthy development and application of science such a society cannot function properly.
    Talcott Parsons (1902–1979)

As usurpation is the exercise of power, which another hath a right to, so tyranny is the exercise of power beyond right, which no body can have a right to. And this is making use of the power any one has in his hands, not for the good of those who are under it, but for his own private separate advantage.
    John Locke (1632–1704)

In 1869 he started his work for temperance instigated by three drunken men who came to his home with a paper signed by a saloonkeeper and his patrons on which was written “For God’s sake organize a temperance society.”
