National Democratic Congress (Ghana)

The National Democratic Congress is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry John Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. The NDC was formed ahead of elections in 1992 and in 1996 returned Jerry John Rawlings to power. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election, and it was not until the 2008 election that they regained it with candidate John Atta Mills.

The NDC's party symbol is an umbrella with an eagle's head on top. Party colors are red, white, green, and black.

Internationally, the NDC is a member of the Socialist International.

Famous quotes containing the words national, democratic and/or congress:

We want, and must have, a national policy, as to slavery, which deals with it as being wrong.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

In democratic ages men rarely sacrifice themselves for another, but they show a general compassion for all the human race. One never sees them inflict pointless suffering, and they are glad to relieve the sorrows of others when they can do so without much trouble to themselves. They are not disinterested, but they are gentle.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

What Congress and the popular sentiment approve is rarely defeated by reason of constitutional objections. I trust the measure will turn out well. It is a great relief to me. Defeat in this way, after a full and public hearing before this [Electoral] Commission, is not mortifying in any degree, and success will be in all respects more satisfactory.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
