National Courtesy Campaign (Singapore)

The National Courtesy Campaign was a campaign launched in June 1979 by the Ministry of Culture of Singapore as a means of encouraging Singaporeans to be more kind and considerate to each other, so as to create a pleasant social environment. It was to be an annual effort by the government to encourage the people to adopt a more courteous attitude and lifestyle. It was seen as a means of ensuring a smooth transition to a new Singapore which would be densely populated, where people lived and worked in high rise towns, offices and factories, while traveling in crowded buses and lifts. In March 2001, the campaign was subsumed by the Singapore Kindness Movement.

Famous quotes containing the words national, courtesy and/or campaign:

While I do not think it was so intended I have always been of the opinion that this turned out to be much the best for me. I had no national experience. What I have ever been able to do has been the result of first learning how to do it. I am not gifted with intuition. I need not only hard work but experience to be ready to solve problems. The Presidents who have gone to Washington without first having held some national office have been at great disadvantage.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

When a language creates—as it does—a community within the present, it does so only by courtesy of a community between the present and the past.
    Christopher Ricks (b. 1933)

You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose.
    Mario Cuomo (b. 1932)
