He was once briefly married to socialite and model Annabelle Neilson but they divorced in 1997. He has since been linked to Natalie Portman, Petra Nemcova, and Princess Florence von Preussen (born 1983), a great granddaughter of the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. He has regularly been referred to as one of the most eligible bachelors in New York and London.
Rothschild lived for a time in New York before settling in Switzerland in 2000, and according to the Swiss business magazine Bilanz he is a resident of Klosters in Graubünden.
The racehorse Nathaniel, winner of the 2011 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, was bred and owned by Rothschild's mother and is named after him.
