Naming Taboo - Methods To Avoid Offence

Methods To Avoid Offence

There were three ways to avoid using a taboo character:

  • Changing the character to another one which usually was a synonym or sounded like the character being avoided. For example, the Xuanwu Gate (玄武門:the Black Warrior Gate) of the Forbidden City was renamed as "Shenwu" (神武門:Gate of Divine Might) in order to avoid the Kangxi Emperor's name Xuanye (玄燁).
  • Leaving the character as a blank.
  • Omitting a stroke in the character, especially the final stroke.

Compare to the writing of G-d or L-rd in Judaism.

Famous quotes containing the words methods, avoid and/or offence:

    I believe in women; and in their right to their own best possibilities in every department of life. I believe that the methods of dress practiced among women are a marked hindrance to the realization of these possibilities, and should be scorned or persuaded out of society.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

    No one likes having offended another person; hence everyone feels so much better if the other person doesn’t show he’s been offended. Nobody likes being confronted by a wounded spaniel. Remember that. It is much easier patiently—and tolerantly—to avoid the person you have injured than to approach him as a friend. You need courage for that.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

    Isabella. Yet show some pity.
    Angelo. I show it most of all when I show justice;
    For then I pity those I do not know,
    Which a dismissed offence would after gall.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
