As of 2011 India census, Nagercoil had a population of 224,329 of which 110,132 are Males and 114,197 are females. Nagercoil has an average literacy rate of 95.35%. In Nagercoil, 8.5% of the population is between the age group of 0 – 6 years.
Though the official population count (for the municipal area) is close to 2.25 lakhs, a significant population lives outside the municipal limits, in the suburbs.Tamil is the most spoken language. English is also widely understood in the city.
The greatest concentration of the population of the town and the District is along the coastal belt, on the eastern side, while the largely forested areas on the western side of the district (along the Western Ghats) are sparsely populated.
