Mystic Aquarium & Institute For Exploration

The Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration is an aquarium and oceanography institute in Mystic, Connecticut. The Aquarium is one of four U.S. facilities holding Steller sea lions and it has one of the largest outdoor Beluga Whale exhibits in the United States. Special exhibits include a ray and shark touch pool, a penguin exhibit, and a jelly gallery.

The Institute for Exploration features maps, diagrams, and models from Dr. Robert Ballard's explorations of the Black Sea and of the wreck of the RMS Titanic. At the Nautilus Live Theater, presentations tell more of Dr. Ballard's more recent explorations and the ship E/V Nautilus. Through technology, audience members are linked to crew members on the ship at sea and can ask them questions directly.

The aquarium is a member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Famous quotes containing the words mystic, aquarium, institute and/or exploration:

    A fig for
    The seal of fire,
    Death hairy-heeled, and the tapped ghost in wood,
    We make me mystic as the arm of air,
    The two-a-vein, the foreskin, and the cloud.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

    The Aquarium is gone. Everywhere,
    giant finned cars nose forward like fish;
    a savage servility
    slides by on grease.
    Robert Lowell (1917–1977)

    Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

    For women who do not love us, as for the “disappeared”, knowing that we no longer have any hope does not prevent us form continuing to wait. We live on our guard, on watch; women whose son has gone asea on a dangerous exploration imagine at any minute, although it has long been certain that he has perished, that he will enter, miraculously saved, and healthy.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)
