Early Years

Silva was born in the city of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Her father died when she was only six years old and she was raised by her mother, who also served as her source of inspiration. Silva and her fans referred to her mother as "Mama Yeya". In 1927, Silva made her first public presentation at the "Oliver Theater" in Arecibo. In 1928, Silva and her mother moved to New York, where she was to start a career in radio, theater and musical plays.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

[In early adolescence] she becomes acutely aware of herself as a being perceived by others, judged by others, though she herself is the harshest judge, quick to list her physical flaws, quick to undervalue and under-rate herself not only in terms of physical appearance but across a wide range of talents, capacities and even social status, whereas boys of the same age will cite their abilities, their talents and their social status pretty accurately.
    Terri Apter (20th century)

We have our difficulties, true; but we are a wiser and a tougher nation than we were in 1932. Never have there been six years of such far flung internal preparedness in all of history. And this has been done without any dictator’s power to command, without conscription of labor or confiscation of capital, without concentration camps and without a scratch on freedom of speech, freedom of the press or the rest of the Bill of Rights.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
