Music of The Maldives - Copy Songs

Copy Songs

The most widely known songs in Maldives are those copied from Bollywood, which take up about 30 of the whole music industry. There had been talks about stopping the habit by the end of 2009, although no remarkable progress has been made. Most of the non-copy or original songs come from independent bands who prefer to make their own music. Some of the popular original bands include Mezzo Band, Zero Degree Atoll, Nothnegal, Trio, Shiuz, 1984 and Traphic Jam. Maldivian youth are generally those against plagiarism, while the older generation still prefer copy songs.

Even though almost all artists sing copy songs, there are a few artists who sing only original songs. One prominent melodist is Falaah from Kaashidhoo, who probably has made more original melodies than any other artist in the history.

Famous quotes containing the words copy and/or songs:

Matisse makes a drawing, then he makes a copy of it. He recopies it five times, ten times, always clarifying the line. He’s convinced that the last, the most stripped down, is the best, the purest, the definitive one; and in fact, most of the time, it was the first. In drawing, nothing is better than the first attempt.
    Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)

O past! O happy life! O songs of joy!
In the air, in the woods, over fields,
    Loved! loved! loved! loved! loved!
But my mate no more, no more with me!
    We two together no more.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)
