Mexican traditional folk music can be classified in two aspects:

  • By types of musical forms and styles: corrido, canción Ranchera, Son Huasteco, Son jarocho, Mexican Danzón, Mexican Bolero, Son istmeño, Son Jaliscience, Chilena, Son Calentano, Son Planeco, and Canto cardenche.
  • By types of ensembles: banda, conjunto calentano, conjunto huasteco, conjunto jarocho, mariachi, and marimba.
