Music Of Maine
Maine is a state of the United States, located in a region called New England. Its musical tradition possibly extends back thousands of years to the music of the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and other indigenous peoples. Modern musicians from Maine include the bluegrass brothers Roland and Clarence White and the contemporary ragtime performer Glenn Jenks, singer/songwriter Bruce Thulin.
In the colonial era, the talented composer, singer, and compiler of tune books and Maine resident Supply Belcher (1751–1836) was known in his time as "the Handel of Maine." Belcher organized the first choir in Maine.

Famous quotes containing the words music of, music and/or maine:
“His style is eminently colloquial, and no wonder it is strange to meet with in a book. It is not literary or classical; it has not the music of poetry, nor the pomp of philosophy, but the rhythms and cadences of conversation endlessly repeated.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Good music is very close to primitive language.”
—Denis Diderot (17131784)
“We know of no scripture which records the pure benignity of the gods on a New England winter night. Their praises have never been sung, only their wrath deprecated. The best scripture, after all, records but a meagre faith. Its saints live reserved and austere. Let a brave, devout man spend the year in the woods of Maine or Labrador, and see if the Hebrew Scriptures speak adequately to his condition and experience.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
