A muddy flood is produced by an accumulation of run-off over agricultural land . Sediments are picked up by the run-off and carried as suspended matter or bed-load. Muddy floods are typically a hill-slope process, and should not be confused with confusion with mudflows produced by mass movements.
Muddy floods can damage the road infrastructure and may deposit layers of mud blanket and may also clog sewers and damage private property.
It has been referred to 'muddy floods' since 1980s. A similar designation appeared in French ('inondations boueuses') during the same period.

Famous quotes containing the words muddy and/or flood:
“The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.”

“The mighty river flowing dark and deep,
With ebb and flood from the remote sea-tides
Vague-sounding through the Citys sleepless sleep,
Is named the River of the Suicides;”
