Mt. Olive Pickle Company - Pickle Drop

Pickle Drop

On December 31, 1999, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company held the first New Year's Eve "pickle drop," in which a glowing green 10-foot (3 m)-high pickle is lowered on a flagpole at 7pm local time (midnight GMT). Guests are provided with hats, noisemakers and refreshments including cookies, hot chocolate and, of course, pickles. The event has turned into an annual occurrence and a source of pride for the community and also benefits the Food Bank of North Carolina through donations of canned goods from guests.

Famous quotes containing the words pickle and/or drop:

A plague o’ these pickle herring!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Chaucer is fresh and modern still, and no dust settles on his true passages. It lightens along the line, and we are reminded that flowers have bloomed, and birds sung, and hearts beaten in England. Before the earnest gaze of the reader, the rust and moss of time gradually drop off, and the original green life is revealed. He was a homely and domestic man, and did breathe quite as modern men do.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
