Motor Oil - Packaging

Packaging

Motor oil came in glass bottles, metal cans and metal/cardboard cans, before the modern plastic bottle which started to appear in the 1980s. Oil can spouts were made separately from the cans; the spouts could be used to puncture the top of the can and to provide an easy way to pour the oil.

In modern times oil is generally found on the market in small bottles in the size of either 1 U.S. quart (946mL) or 1L as well as in larger plastic containers ranging from approximately 4.4 to 5 litres (4.6 to 5.3 U.S. qt) due to most small to mid-size engines require around 3.6 to 5.2 litres (3.8 to 5.5 U.S. qt) of engine oil.
