Motion Perception - Perceptual Learning of Motion

Perceptual Learning of Motion

Detection and discrimination of motion can be improved by training with long term results. Participants trained to detect the movements of dots on a screen in only one direction become particularly good at detecting small movements in the directions around that in which they have been trained. This improvement was still present 10 weeks later. However perceptual learning is highly specific. For example, the participants show no improvement when tested around other motion directions, or for other sorts of stimuli.

Famous quotes containing the words learning and/or motion:

Just as we are learning to value and conserve the air we breathe, the water we drink, the energy we use, we must learn to value and conserve our capacity for nurture. Otherwise, in the name of human potential we will slowly but surely erode the source of our humanity.
    Elaine Heffner (20th century)

Speech belongs half to the speaker, half to the listener. The latter must prepare to receive it according to the motion it takes.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
