The population was 1,725 in 2011 and 2,006 according to the Statistics Canada 2006 Census and about 3,500 people by municipal government estimate. Census figures for Moosonee may be inaccurate because of incomplete enumeration, a common problem with remote communities. About 85 per cent of the population are native Cree. The number of total private dwellings is 658 of which 596 are occupied by usual residents. Population density per square kilometre is 3.6. The most recent detailed census information available for Moosonee is from 1996. At the time of that census, mother tongue was 68.5% English, 23.0% Cree, 4.4% English and Cree, and 2.6% French. The town was 75.7% First Nations, 17.3% White, and 5.4% Métis.
