Moosewood Restaurant

Moosewood Restaurant is a restaurant that was founded by Mollie Katzen and others in 1973 in downtown Ithaca, New York. Moosewood is located on the first floor of the Dewitt Mall building, which is a converted high school.

Moosewood Restaurant is known for its vegetarian cooking, and was named one of the thirteen most influential restaurants of the 20th century by Bon Appetit magazine. It won a James Beard Foundation "American Classic" Award in 2000. While they are most known for vegetarian cuisine, their menu does feature a daily fish entree.

Frozen Moosewood dinners under the Moosewood name are available in grocery stores. The meals were produced, under license, by Fairfield Farm Kitchens until March 2008, at which point Blue Marble Brands (part of United Natural Foods) purchased the license.

The restaurant is owned by a collective which operates the restaurant and writes and publishes cookbooks. The collective has produced over 10 cookbooks over the years, beginning with New Recipes from Moosewood Restaurant, and its most recent Simple Suppers from Moosewood Restaurant. In 2010, the Moosewood Collective donated its archive of original cookbook manuscripts to Cornell University where they are housed in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections in the Carl A. Kroch Library.

Mollie Katzen's Moosewood Cookbook, a highly regarded vegetarian resource, was produced by Mollie Katzen, one of the early operators of the restaurant. She is no longer affiliated with Moosewood Restaurant, however her work was instrumental in the name recognition it garners.
