Molecular Biology and Evolution is a monthly journal owned and edited by The Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution and published by Oxford University Press. It publishes work in the intersection of molecular biology and evolutionary biology. The founding editors were Walter Fitch and Masatoshi Nei; the present editor-in-chief is Sudhir Kumar.

In 2008, its impact factor was 7.3, up from 6.4 in 2007, ranking 4th of the 39 journals in the "Evolutionary Biology" category. By 2009, its impact factor was 9.87. The current 5-Yr impact factor is 9.857.

In 2011, Molecular Biology and Evolution was criticized in The Guardian for hiding a retraction notice behind a paywall (charging readers $32 for the sentence "This article has been permanently retracted from publication by the author").

Famous quotes containing the words biology and/or evolution:

Nothing can be more incorrect than the assumption one sometimes meets with, that physics has one method, chemistry another, and biology a third.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

Analyze theory-building how we will, we all must start in the middle. Our conceptual firsts are middle-sized, middle-distanced objects, and our introduction to them and to everything comes midway in the cultural evolution of the race.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)
