Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi - Expulsion of University Scientists

Expulsion of University Scientists

In 2006, the Ahmadinejad government systematically forced numerous Iranian scientists and University professors to resign or to retire. It has been referred to as a second cultural revolution. The policy has been said to replace current professors with younger ones. Many University professors received letters indicating their early retirement unexpectedly.

However many believe that the government's main goal is to replace Iranian scientists with fundamentalists and finally convert the universities into Hawza (traditional religious schools).

Despite huge demonstrations and protests of Iranian students, Zahedi appointed several mullahs with no academic degrees as chancellors of several Universities (the most prominent example being that of Tehran University).

Famous quotes containing the words expulsion, university and/or scientists:

The Expulsion from Eden is an act of vindictive womanish spite; the Fall of Man, as recounted in the Bible, comes nearer to the Fall of God.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)

Cold an old predicament of the breath:
    Adroit, the shapely prefaces complete,
    Accept the university of death.
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)

Maybe we were the blind mechanics of disaster, but you don’t pin the guilt on the scientists that easily. You might as well pin it on M motherhood.... Every man who ever worked on this thing told you what would happen. The scientists signed petition after petition, but nobody listened. There was a choice. It was build the bombs and use them, or risk that the United States and the Soviet Union and the rest of us would find some way to go on living.
    John Paxton (1911–1985)
