Howard Goldblatt, Mo Yan's English translator, said that Mo Yan told him that he was welcome to do what he wanted with his writings because Mo Yan did not know foreign-languages. Goldblatt added that his writing style is often unfamiliar with Western readers, and that publishers often demanded that he trim parts of Mo's novels.
