Missionary Society of Saint Thomas

Missionary Society Of Saint Thomas

The Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle is a Catholic missionary organization founded in 1968 in Kerala. It is the missionary of the Syro Malabar Church, for missionary work in less Christian areas in and outside India. It was founded by bishop Sebastian Vayalil.

For organisational purpose the Society functions as regions. There are three officially declared regions. They are Ujjain in M.P., Mandya in Karnataka, and Sangli in Maharashtra. There are 300 priests working as full-time members of the Society. All of them belong to the Syro Malabar Church.

Apart from that, a few priests are working in various other continents as pastors. MST in USA is an extension of the MST in Kerala.

Famous quotes containing the words missionary, society, saint and/or thomas:

    Nobody had ever instructed him that a slave-ship, with a procession of expectant sharks in its wake, is a missionary institution, by which closely-packed heathen are brought over to enjoy the light of the Gospel.
    Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896)

    The caretaking has to be done. “Somebody’s got to be the mommy.” Individually, we underestimate this need, and as a society we make inadequate provision for it. Women take up the slack, making the need invisible as we step in to fill it.
    Mary Catherine Bateson (20th century)

    The saint and poet seek privacy to ends the most public and universal: and it is the secret of culture, to interest the man more in his public, than in his private quality.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    Out of the sighs a little comes,
    But not of grief, for I have knocked down that
    Before the agony; the spirit grows,
    Forgets, and cries;
    A little comes, is tasted and found good....
    —Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)
