- In 1985 there were nine preliminary judges who each gave the contestants a score of 2, 3 or 4. This meant that the contestants could receive a minimum score of 18 and a maximum of 36.
- 1985 rules required that at least one contestant from each continent advanced to the top 15 semifinal round. This is why Miss Zaire, with a score of 24, made it through.
