According to the 2001 Census of Canada, there were 18,508 people residing in Miramichi. Some 48.1 percent were male and 51.9 percent were female.

Miramichi bills itself as "Canada's Irish Capital", and is home to a annual Irish festival. It is one of the most Irish city's in Canada.
