Death

She died from congestive heart failure, at the age of 66, in Queens, New York. She and Harrison had no children. The actress Emily Stevens (1882–1928) was her cousin, as was Elizabeth Maddern, the first wife of author Jack London; she was also related to stage actress Merle Maddern (1887-1984). Famous quotes containing the word death:

    I mourn the safe and motherly old middle-class queen, who held the nation warm under the fold of her big, hideous Scotch-plaid shawl and whose duration had been so extraordinarily convenient and beneficent. I felt her death much more than I should have expected; she was a sustaining symbol—and the wild waters are upon us now.
    Henry James (1843–1916)

    Cowards die many times before their deaths;
    The valiant never taste of death but once.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    The death ... of a beautiful woman, is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
