The 1960 season was the Golden Gophers' seventh under head coach Murray Warmath. The Golden Gophers won eight games and lost two. Total attendance for the season was 334,954, which averaged to 55,825. The season high for attendance was against Illinois. The Gophers won the sixth and most recent national title. The team finished first in both the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI). The voting was held prior to the Rose Bowl.

Guard Tom Brown was named an All-American by the AP, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Coach & Athlete Magazine, The Sporting News, Newspaper Enterprise Association, UPI, American Football Coaches Association, Look Magazine, New York News, ABC-TV and Football Writers Association of America. Brown also awarded the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, given to the Big Ten most valuable player. Brown, end Tom Hall and center Greg Larson were named All-Big Ten first team. Brown was awarded the Outland Trophy and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. Tackle Frank Brixius was named an Academic All-American and Academic All-Big Ten.

Tom Brown was awarded the Team MVP Award.
