The 1954 season was the Golden Gophers' first under head coach Murray Warmath. The Golden Gophers won seven games and lost two. Total attendance for the season was 347,555, which averaged to 57,925. The season high for attendance was against Iowa. The team finished the season ranked #20 by the UPI poll.

Fullback Bob McNamara was named an All-American by the Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America and Look Magazine. McNamara was also named All-Big Ten first team. Fullback John Baumgartner was named Academic All-Big Ten.

Bob McNamara was awarded the Team MVP Award.
