Military Ranks and Insignia of The Sri Lanka Navy

The following tables present the military ranks and insignia of the Sri Lanka Navy. These ranks generally correspond with those of Western or Commonwealth Nations militaries, and reflect those of the British Warrant Officer, Non Commissioned Officer and enlisted ranks and the Commissioned officer ranks. Sri Lanka does have the Admiral(1) rank, but it is only awarded to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) or as an honorary rank. But after eradicating the LTTE terrorism, the then Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda was promoted to the rank of Admiral in recognition of his service.

Famous quotes containing the words military, ranks and/or navy:

His ugliness was the stuff of legend. In an age of affordable beauty, there was something heraldic about his lack of it. The antique arm whined as he reached for another mug. It was a Russian military prosthesis, a seven-function force-feedback manipulator, cased in grubby pink plastic.
    William Gibson (b. 1948)

I take such men to be inspired. I fancy that this moment Shakespeare in heaven ranks with Gabriel Raphael and Michael. And if another Messiah ever comes twill be in Shakespeare’s person.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

I wish to reiterate all the reasons which [my predecessor] has presented in favor of the policy of maintaining a strong navy as the best conservator of our peace with other nations and the best means of securing respect for the assertion of our rights of the defense of our interests, and the exercise of our influence in international matters.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
