Mike Renfro - NFL Career - Houston Oilers

Houston Oilers

Renfro became known for catching a pass in the 1979 AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which ultimately was ruled incomplete. Late in the 3rd quarter, Renfro appeared to make a touchdown catch for the Houston Oilers to tie, but after the officials huddled together (instant replay did not exist at this time), the catch was ruled incomplete and the Steelers would go on to win 27-13. Replays clearly show that Renfro did get both feet inbounds with control of the football. Challenges based on instant replay would not become a part of the NFL rules until years later. Renfro's nullified catch did, however, get the instant replay process underway.

In Washington, the first thing people tell you is what their job is. In Los Angeles you learn their star sign. In Houston you’re told how rich they are. And in New York they tell you what their rent is.
