Microneurography - Advantages

Advantages

Microneurography records intact axons in vivo and is minimally invasive. Reports of persistent or clear nerve damage due to microneurography have not been made. As a result, repeated recordings on the same living subject are possible and longitudinal observations can be made. Microneurography, unlike other techniques, can also distinguish individual action potentials in single, identified peripheral fibers. Currently, it is the only technique used to detect and quantify the pathophysiology of positive sensory phenomena mediated by large myelinated fibers and thin myelinated and unmyelinated fibers. Furthermore, microneurography has the advantage over an in vitro recording because normal blood perfusion of the nerve is maintained and the axonal microenvironment is relatively undisturbed. This allows for the preservation of the resting membrane potential and other functions dependent on the normal functioning of the sodium pump.

Famous quotes containing the word advantages:

Men hear gladly of the power of blood or race. Every body likes to know that his advantages cannot be attributed to air, soil, sea, or to local wealth, as mines and quarries, nor to laws and traditions, nor to fortune, but to superior brain, as it makes the praise more personal to him.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

There is no one thoroughly despicable. We cannot descend much lower than an idiot; and an idiot has some advantages over a wise man.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)

To become aware in time when young of the advantages of age; to maintain the advantages of youth in old age: both are pure fortune.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)
