Michael Echanis - Early Life

Early Life

Echanis was born in Nampa, Idaho. In private conversations Echanis offered his belief that having been raised in the traditional Basque culture of his family, although he was not of Basque decent himself, influenced his abilities to endure hardship and pain. He enlisted in the US Army in 1969 upon graduation from Ontario High School, choosing to graduate early and enter the service. According to the Echanis family those stories offering he enlisted in lieu of going to jail are false. Echanis had long been interested in the military and came from a family where his father, Frank, and his uncles had all served during World War II. His cousin, Joseph Y Echanis (United States Air Force) had gone missing in 1969 while on a mission in Laos and Echanis hoped he might be able to learn something of his fate if he could get to Vietnam.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

Long before I wrote stories, I listened for stories. Listening for them is something more acute than listening to them. I suppose it’s an early form of participation in what goes on. Listening children know stories are there. When their elders sit and begin, children are just waiting and hoping for one to come out, like a mouse from its hole.
    Eudora Welty (b. 1909)

There’s something tragic in the fate of almost every person—it’s just that the tragic is often concealed from a person by the banal surface of life.... A woman will complain of indigestion and not even know that what she means is that her whole life has been shattered.
    Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818–1883)
