Metropolitan Areas of Germany - Big Five

The five most important regions, collectively often called the "big five", are frequently compared with other European metropolitan areas for investments and market development. They are (from north to south): Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf/Cologne, Frankfurt am Main and Munich. Globalization and World Cities Study Group (GaWC) considers Frankfurt and Munich an "α" (Alpha) global city, while the others are considered "β" (Beta) global cities.

Frankfurt am Main
Berlin
Hamburg
Munich
Düsseldorf

Each of them form types of clusters and achieve varying levels of performance in areas such as business activity, human capital, information and technology exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement.

  • Frankfurt/Rhine-Main, for its financial economy and human transport
  • Berlin, for its political and cultural importance
  • Hamburg, for its importance in international shipping
  • Munich, for its business, science and technology community
  • Düsseldorf/Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr, for its logistics, technology and industry

Famous quotes containing the word big:

It is possible that the telephone has been responsible for more business inefficiency than any other agency except laudanum.... In the old days when you wanted to get in touch with a man you wrote a note, sprinkled it with sand, and gave it to a man on horseback. It probably was delivered within half an hour, depending on how big a lunch the horse had had. But in these busy days of rush-rush-rush, it is sometimes a week before you can catch your man on the telephone.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

I’m headed for a land that’s far away
    Beside the crystal fountains.
So come with me, we’ll go and see
    The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
—Unknown. The Big Rock Candy Mountains (l. 5–8)
